I teach lit and composition at South Carolina State U. I have been exploring how to use low-cost/low-tech tools in my classrooms. I’m good at breaking big tasks into small, doable bits, so let me know if I can be of help.

Very specifically:
a) The creation of post-docs and/or grad fellowships geared towards projects that work in Africana/Af-Am or Ethnic Studies areas of inquiry. These positions should be hosted if possible at institutions with strong DH credentials.
b) The creation of travel grants for minority groups to attend THATCamps and other DH conferences.
c) The activism of those working in outreach capacities to seek out faculty and graduate students of color, learn about their projects and research and encourage them to participate in our world. This also means strong collaborations with Africana/Af-Am and Ethnic Studies institutes/departments.
d) The activism of those working in curation to seek out projects around fragile and marginal collections in the global south.

No small order that one, so I would be happy if we can even focus on one of the above and do a great job at it.

I’ve been editing as suggestions come in so keep checking and keep the feedback coming.

Also, is everyone free to edit this page? If so, please feel free to do that. If not, would it make sense to move this to a Google doc?

Thanks,

As Stewart said in his post, it’s important that we reach out to community colleges when planning THATCamps, but I am also interested in putting together a THATCamp Community College to bring together like-minded CC faculty to learn how to better integrate DH in our classrooms. Many CCs face unique challenges when it comes to tech accessibility both on campus and at home and it would be useful to discuss these challenges with people in similar situations.

The “What If I’m Not a Humanist” section is particularly great. I worry that if we begin to list specific areas of study (Queer Studies, Disability Studies, Composition, what have you) we risk leaving possible participants out. Of course, nothing will ever be perfect so it’s just a thought.

Perhaps we could leave the language as broad as possible (i.e. saying humanists and non-humanists alike are all welcome) then reach out to specific departments or people in our institutions that cover the subject-areas mentioned above. My impression is that under-represented people aren’t turned away by the language of the invitation, but rather that they never receive it.

The “About” page for Great Lakes THATCamp is a good example www.2011.greatlakesthatcamp.org/about/ — under the “Who Should Attend?” section, we see a nice range of examples in terms of institutional roles and fields of study, which could be even larger to include Disability Studies, Queer Studies, and/or Race and Ethnic Studies. I also think including examples is generally better than just saying “everyone is welcome”.

Other suggestions?

To that point, can we come up with some examples of “welcoming language” that organizers could use?

I’d personally veer away from “diversity”, primarily because I think a lot of people who do work in race and ethnic studies find it troublesome in various ways (in ways that are similar to “multiculturalism”). What about something like “promoting inclusion”?

I think beyond the great suggestion of proofreading for language in promotional materials that may unintentionally exclude people, it is also important to include welcoming language.

I’m originally from the Atlanta area but don’t have many scholarly connections there.

As a historian, one of my interests is how we can use digital methods for researching African-American and women’s history– and helping people who already have training in those history subfields to learn more digital tools. I’d be happy to share how digital methods have helped me write about the African-American men and women of the Manhattan Project and on African-American and Mexican-American midwives during the early 20th century. I’m located in the Boston area, so my ability to participate in person would depend on my budget.

Please let me know how I can help.

And as I wrote here, “I use the term ‘hack’ to mean ‘a good workaround’ or ‘a good-enough solution.’ Sometimes a ‘hack’ will involve the use of technology, but sometimes it will not.”

What kind of help do you need? Let us know!
